Disney's Environmentality Challenge

Written By:  Sonal Pheran, grade 5

One morning Mrs. Harrison's 4/5 combo class had finally decided what they will be doing for Disney's Environmentality Challenge.  We had come up with the idea of making an organic garden.

The first day we started, Ahmed Hassan, the host of Yard Crashers was our guest speaker.  He talked about what organic meant and what we had to do for our garden.  Then we took all of the shovels outside and started to cultivate the soil.

We also typed and sent business letters to some nurseries with a request for plant donations.  The Kawahara Nursery had agreed to give us some plants but unfortunately they called us with some bad news.  They told us that the bunnies had eaten all the plants that were to be donated, so we bought our own plants instead.

Our next project was to plant the plants.  We had planted a variety of vegetables including lettuce and broccoli.  From that day on, we have been watering the garden regularly.  Every time we go in the garden, we pull out the weeds too.

The next project was to make a green house using PVC pipes, stakes, plastic, and rocks.  Once we were finished with that we made a three stage compost bin.

About a week ago, we made another green house.  The plants are doing great.  We were even able to pick and taste some of the vegetables.  I tasted the Arugula lettuce and it didn't taste very good.  It was very bitter.  But the good thing about vegetables is that they are organic, meaning without any pesticides.
